At least 250 artistes from all genres are expected to attend each of the workshops scheduled for July 1 in Harare at the Dutch Reformed Church or the Standard Theatre.
in Bulawayo they will converge ON the Amakhosi Theatre on July 3.
The thrust of the workshops is to engage artistes on how to effectively use the arts to fight violence against women and girls.
After the workshop, it is hoped that artistes will emerge knowledgeable and informed enough to articulate and speak against violence directed towards the fairer sex.
Firstly, it will assess the understanding of these issues among artistes then go on to impart factual knowledge and encourage them to speak against violence directed to women and girls.
This initiative is in support of the UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE Campaign to end violence perpetrated on women and girls.
It is being implemented with funding support from the Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust, Musasa and with technical support from UN Women.
As a member of SARO, Nyathi has been tasked to ensure increased support, public awareness and social mobilisation to engage the nation in fighting violence.
Some of the speakers lined up for the workshops include representatives of Padare/Enkundleni, Musasa, Berry Heart from Botswana, UN Women, Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture, Women’s Coalition in Zimbabwe.
Minister of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development Mrs Sithembiso Nyoni will officially open the workshops.
Launched in 2008, the United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign aims to raise public awareness and increase political will and resources for preventing and ending all forms of violence against women and girls in all parts of the world.
The global vision of the UNiTE campaign is a world free from violence against all women and girls.
This vision can only be realised through the meaningful actions and ongoing political commitments of governments, backed by adequate resources.
