Preparations are at advanced stages for the AFDIS Theatre Awards, which are pencilled for next month at Reps Theatre in Belgravia. The awards, which are meant to reward and encourage excellence among artists that took part in productions at Reps Theatre, will held on March 22.
One of the organisers of the awards Stan Higgins said this year’s edition will see winners walking away with trophies.
“The awards are meant to reward and encourage excellence within The Repertory Players.
“As an amateur theatrical society, the awards serve the additional purpose of providing recognition since members of Reps give their time on stage, backstage and behind the scene for the love of theatre and not for financial compensation,” he said.
Higgins said this year’s nominees include some people who have won the awards before.
“Several of this year’s nominees have won awards in previous years, but a welcome number of newcomers has been nominated for the first time,” he said.
“There are three additional prizes put in place although there is no new category.
“There will be three additional awards to the ones published that will be handed out at the ceremony, each of them for general contribution to the theatrical and administrative well-being of Reps, which is Zimbabwe’s premier theatrical venue.”
Higgins is encouraging people from different walks of life to come and attend the event which he says will be fun filled and full of intertainemnt.
“ Members of the public are welcome to attend the awards ceremony and the show which will be starting at 7pm.
Even the attendance of theatre goers will provide support for Reps personalities and reinforces their efforts to provide art and entertainment for the community,” he said.
The awards were originally started in the 1970s as the BAT Awards but sponsorship was taken over by African Distillers in the early 2000s, since then they have been known as the Reps AFDIS awards.
