ASEC end Chiefs’ African dream

Kaizer Chiefs’ CAF Confederation Cup campaign came to an end on Sunday evening after they were beaten 1-0 by ASEC Mimosas in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The West African side claimed a 3-1 aggregate victory and advance into the group stage of Africa’s second-tier club competition. The Amakhosi, who were beaten 2-1 at home in the first leg last weekend, sent a weakened squad to Ivory Coast and had just two players on the bench for the match.

In addition, head coach Stuart Baxter didn’t travel with the squad, handing the reins to former Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo.
Despite their second-string side, Chiefs almost snatched the lead in the first half when Zimbabwean striker Matthew Rusike hit the woodwork.

However, ASEC grew stronger in the second half and with just over 10 minutes to play they scored through Stevens Koffi to seal a 1-0 win. — Supersport
