BULAWAYO East football and netball teams yesterday exchanged swords as they took part in the Bulawayo East Constituency tournament that was sponsored by the Zimbabwe Rainbow Democratic Party Member of Parliament candidate Cuthbert Ncube.

The tourney was held at Old Nic Mine Grounds in fulfilment of a commitment Ncube made early this year. The Bulawayo East Constituency tourney featured a netball and football competition.

Six teams took part in the football event while in netball there were five teams. Old Nic Mine won in both disciplines with the netball team beating Mahatshula 6-1 in the final while Old Nic football team edged Mahatshula 1-0.

The two winners walked away with a goat, balls and trophy each for their efforts. Ncube said the tourney was aimed at uplifting youths in the constituency and bring people together.

“Sport is one area that can present job opportunities to young people so we decided to host this tournament to give the youths a chance to hone their skills while also bringing people together. This is not a once-off event and we will be holding it quarterly to keep on encouraging young people to find ways of keeping themselves occupied other than just drinking beer and engaging in other vices,” he said.

He said sports can be used as a springboard of nurturing youths’ careers.

National Patriotic Front candidate for Ward 3 Khulani Ndlovu who was the organiser of the tourney said the games were part of enhancing social activities in the constituency.
