‘Aspiring Zifa councillors must have 5 O-Levels’

This comes at a time when plans are at an advanced stage to reduce the number of affiliates voting at the Zifa assembly.
The Zifa Constitutional Review Committee assigned to amend the constitution so that it meets Fifa requirements and laws of the country is expected to come up with a  reduced number of affiliates that vote at the assembly.

The Constitutional Review Committee is made up of legal practitioners Cosmas Mukwesha, Tino Hove, Timothy Sangarwe and Tawengwa Hara who is the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League board member competitions.
The Zifa chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze yesterday confirmed that in the draft constitution that was presented to the association’s president Cuthbert

Dube on Monday, there were provisions to set minimum educational qualifications.
“What is happening is that football is business and with the changes that are happening in the game you need people who will appreciate and adjust to these developments. Those voted into office are expected to make meaningful contributions to the development of the game hence this requirement that to be eligible to participate in the elections, one should have at least five O-Levels and have no criminal record.

“We know and we are aware that this might face resistance but if people have football at heart, then this document will sail through. Clean people need to run public offices so that even the corporate world supports the system. Now it is up to the members of the council to debate the matter,” said Mashingaidze. The Zifa Assembly is set for 31 March and this matter is likely to take centre stage. Zifa president Cuthbert Dube last weekend took a swipe at individuals who were of the view that being

voted into Zifa office was an opportunity to make money.

“The problem is that some people want to make money out of football as opposed to working to develop the game. I have never taken board meeting allowances because I know that when I came into Zifa I wanted to serve football,” said Dube.
