MORE than 5 000 people are expected to attend the 46th Independence anniversary celebrations in Harare, which will be held at St Aidan School in Chitungwiza.
In an interview, Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Senator Charles Tawengwa confirmed that preparations for Harare’s 46th Independence celebrations are progressing well.
“Preparations are well ahead of schedule; it’s all systems go for the Independence celebrations.
“More than 5 000 people are expected to attend. As Harare province, we will deploy several buses at our usual pick-up points,” said Minister Tawengwa.
He said some people would travel to their rural areas for the independence holiday.
“Those who remain in Harare are expected to be in Chitungwiza. Food and drinks will be provided, and there will also be entertainment,” said Minister Tawengwa.
“We will have displays from school children, as well as helicopter displays, to make the holiday memorable. We expect children to come and listen to the message from the President.”
Minister Tawengwa urged people to come in their numbers for such a memorable day
“We urge the people in Harare to come out in large numbers in Chitungwiza to commemorate our Independence. Let us turn out in numbers and support the programme,” he said.
Last year, the Independence celebrations were commemorated in Epworth.
Minister Tawengwa said the choice of venue is in line with the bold decision by the Second Republic to decentralise key national events.
“As you are aware, President Mnangagwa said that we rotate, to ensure everyone has access to national events, under the mantra of leaving no one and no place behind.
“As Independence Day approaches, Harare Province is preparing for the historic event. We invite everyone to attend in large numbers so that we can celebrate our Independence Day as a united people: one nation, one Harare Metropolitan Province,’’ he said.
The main national celebrations for the 46th Independence anniversary will take place in Maphisa, Matabeleland South Province.
The selection of Maphisa underscored the Government’s commitment to inclusivity and national unity and ensured that every region could meaningfully share in the fruits of the country’s hard-won independence and ongoing development.
The occasion will also celebrate the peaceful environment prevailing in the country.
“Water and sewage infrastructure are also being upgraded, and the Kunzvi Dam project is now very close to completion, among others,” said Minister Tawengwa.
The celebrations will be held under the theme, “Zimbabwe at 46, Unity in action and development in motion towards Vision 2030.”
