Athens Mine scooped the national award for excellence in community empowerment and social impact at the Corporate Social Responsibility Network Zimbabwe (CSR NZ) awards ceremony.

The CSR Network Zimbabwe annually recognises corporates that are doing commendable work in corporate social responsibility and sustainability.

At the sixth edition of the awards held at the Harare International Conference Centre on November 11, Athens Mine managed to place their name on the winners list for positively impacting the community and empowering social groups within the community.

Athens Mine manager, Mr Mawulani Phiri, said the mine is doing good work within the community and it feels good to be recognised after doing positive work.

“It is a good day for us as Athens Mine to receive this award and be recognised for excellence in community empowerment and social impact; it shows that our efforts are being appreciated by organisations as esteemed as CSR Network,” he said.

“We are working tirelessly with artisanal miners while promoting the youth in the community through projects and employment. We are doing all we can to prevent illegal mining,” he added.

The mine is working on a number of projects that are contributing to community development and the realization of Vision 2030.

Athens Mine has assisted illegal miners to formalise their operations to avoid loss of lives that comes with unsafe and illegal mining.

The move also contributes to the improvement of the national economy as mining is one of the main contributors to the growth of the Zimbabwean economy.

Socially, the mine has contributed to the fight against Covid-19 through donating PPE and funding disinfections of public facilities.

Leopold Takawira High School and Mvuma Primary School also benefited from Athens Mine programme as the mine built two classroom blocks and refurbished classrooms.

Athens Mine is a gold mining company located in Mvuma in the Midlands province.

Mr Willard Razawo, the man behind the CSR Awards praised Athens Mine for their work with communities.

“The work of Athens Mine and their positive contribution to the community and realisation of a better Zimbabwe saw it being recognised by CSR Network Zimbabwe and we hope they will not tire but continue to serve the nation not only as Athens but also with their other operations like Vubachikwe Mine in Gwanda and Gaika in Kwekwe. Giving back to the community is a hallmark of their ethos and we celebrate that trait,” he added.

“We are proud of the work being done by our operation and their achievements and pledge to continue working hard and in harmony with the communities around our operations everywhere we are domiciled,” said Robert Mukondiwa, a spokesperson for Duration Gold which runs Athens Mine.
