CHIBUKU Super Cup fever is gripping the football-mad nation, with anticipation building ahead of a mouth-watering quarter-final programme that promises fireworks this weekend.
With the prestigious knockout trophy now within reach, eight teams will battle for places in the semi-finals, setting the stage for a thrilling contest featuring some of the country’s biggest clubs and ambitious cup challengers.
The Chibuku Super Cup has built a reputation for drama, giant-killing acts and memorable moments, and this year’s last-eight phase appears set to deliver another chapter of cup excitement.
The action gets underway on Saturday when CAPS United face ZPC Kariba at Rufaro Stadium, with both sides aware that there is little margin for error in a competition where defeat means elimination.
Sunday offers a double-header, with Dynamos taking on FC Hunters at Rufaro Stadium, while Highlanders host MWOS at Barbourfields Stadium.
The Highlanders-MWOS clash is expected to draw significant interest in Bulawayo, with supporters likely to turn out in large numbers as both teams seek a coveted place in the semi-finals.
Bosso go into the tie on the back of a goalless league draw against Triangle United at Gibbo Stadium. In that match, they were without midfield playmaker Mongameli Tshuma and Kudakwashe Mahachi, who were serving suspensions after accumulating three yellow cards.
Their return this weekend is expected to provide a significant boost for the black-and-white army.
While three quarter-final ties will be played this weekend, the heavyweight clash between Scottland FC and Hardrock FC has been postponed to next Wednesday.
The postponement is a result of Scottland’s continental commitments, with the reigning Zimbabwean champions currently involved in the CAF Champions League.
Scottland are set to face Eswatini side Nsingizini FC in the second leg of their preliminary-round encounter after securing a slender but valuable 1-0 victory in the first leg at the National Sports Stadium last weekend.
The break from domestic cup action gives Scottland an opportunity to focus fully on their continental assignment before shifting attention back to the Chibuku Super Cup.
Their quarter-final against Hardrock is now scheduled for September 16 at Rufaro Stadium, setting up an intriguing battle between the league leaders and their closest challengers.
