THE Bulawayo Athletics Board (BAB) will stage its Open Track and Field meet at White City Stadium tomorrow.
The event will feature cadets, juniors, youths and seniors in track events, which include 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1 500m, 3 000m, 5 000m, 10 000m, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4×100m and 4×200m relays.
In field events, athletes will compete in discus, shot put, javelin, hammer throw, high jump, long jump and triple jump.
BAB chairperson Manuel Mpofu said entry fees are pegged at $1 per event for juniors, $2 per event for seniors, $3 for junior relays and $4 for senior relays.
“Everything is now set and we are still receiving confirmations from clubs and some individuals. There are also teams from outside Bulawayo coming to the event and these include Victoria Falls’ Mosi Striders and Bindura’s Taflow Athletics Club. There is also Dixon Kapambura, who qualified to represent the country at the Africa Junior Championships in Algeria in July,” Mpofu said.
He said they were also expecting athletes representing the country at the Confederation of School Sports Associations of Southern Africa (COSSASA) tournament to be held at the National Sports Stadium on May 2-7.
Mpofu said the last qualifiers of the ZITF Coca Cola Four-Minute Mile semi-finals will also be held during the event.
“We have two qualifiers on Sunday. The first session will be held before the events, while the last will close the day’s programme. This is the last chance for those who want to try their luck. BAB is calling on interested athletes to come in their numbers,” he said.
The Coca-Coal Four Minute Mile is a male competition with a prerequisite time of four minutes 31 seconds for one to qualify for the finals bankrolled by Delta Beverages.
So far, 27 athletes have qualified for the semis that will be held at White City Stadium on the eve of the final set for the ZITF Main Arena on April 29.
