Athletics event shelved

THE Matabeleland South track and field championships, scheduled for this weekend at Pelandaba, have been postponed indefinitely because of financial challenges plaguing the association.
Matabeleland Athletics Board chairperson, Phakamile Lisimati, said one of their major sponsors pulled out, throwing everything into disarray.

“One of our sponsors let us down after they abruptly pulled out and we tried to run around to source for money but to no avail. We are disappointed as an association because we had reached an advanced stage in as far as preparations were concerned and we were now looking at the finer details,” he said.

About 70 athletes had confirmed their participation in the field and track events at the championships.

The organisers had lined up their first 10 000-metre walking race.

Participants were expected to pay a US$1 for juniors and US$2 for seniors.

Lisimati said he was concerned that this will have an adverse impact on the growth of athletics, particularly in Gwanda.
