THE African union has called for the adoption of co-ordinated efforts by key international and regional partners to advance a sustainable political settlement in Sudan following April 2023 failed military coup that led to a civil war.
After meeting with the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu yesterday, AU Commission Chairperson Mr Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said the two organisations should play complementary roles in supporting Sudan’s efforts to restore constitutional order and advance a sustainable political settlement.
Mr Youssouf also welcomed Dr. Gebeyehu’s recent visit to Khartoum, where he held discussions with senior Sudanese officials, including Sovereignty Council Chairman General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
The meeting also discussed bringing through the United Nations, the Quad and the European union into the peace and conflict resolution discussions with a view to ensuring greater coherence and effectiveness of international diplomatic efforts in support of peace in Sudan.
The war has so far resulted in one of the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world, displacing over 14 million people and leaving 33,7 million people or two-thirds of the population, in need of humanitarian support.
