IN a powerful reminder of sport’s ability to transform lives, the African Union Sports Council Region 5 has underscored its commitment to community upliftment through social engagements around the Regional Annual Sports Awards held in Harare recently.
Although it may have been a low-key visit to Chinyaradzo Children’s Home by nominees of the Regional Annual Sports Awards, it illustrated the AUSC’s commitment to ensuring that athletes are well-rounded citizens with a heart for the community.
The visit, led by the Region 5 secretariat and participating athletes, was more than a charitable gesture – it was a bold statement about the deeper purpose of sport in society.
The awards were being held in Zimbabwe for the first time.
While competition remains at the heart of athletic excellence, Region 5 chief executive Stanley Mutoya emphasised that greatness is measured not just in medals, but in moments of compassion and connection.
“Sport has the power to uplift, unite and give hope, especially to those society often overlooks,” Mutoya said.
“This visit to Chinyaradzo is a reminder that our heroes off the field matter just as much as their wins on it.”
For many of the visiting athletes, the setting was familiar – echoing their own journeys through adversity.
Their presence spoke volumes to the children at Chinyaradzo, offering not only inspiration, but also validation.
“Many of these athletes grew up facing challenges, so they understand how meaningful it is to have someone believe in you.
“The athletes’ presence sends a powerful message of encouragement and recognition,” added Mutoya.
The visit formed part of the broader RASA programme, which celebrates the finest in regional sport.
Mutoya was, however, quick to point out that such celebrations must never lose sight of the communities from which these stars emerge.
“As we celebrate regional sporting excellence, we must also remember our communities. Outreach activities like this ensure that the glory of sport touches lives far beyond the stadium,” he said.
By bridging the gap between elite performance and everyday reality, AUSC Region 5 continues to demonstrate that sport is not just about records and rankings, it’s about responsibility, empathy and the enduring power of human connection.
Those values are also set to reverberate in Namibia when Windhoek hosts the next edition of the AUSC Region 5 Games next month.
