DEVELOPMENT worker, philanthropist and author Dr Olivia Gumbo believes mentorship is irreplaceable in progressive human life. Dr Gumbo made the remarks during a handover of copies of her book “It’s for You Lord” at Roosevelt Girls High School in Harare, last week.
“You should learn from older people and also mentor young ones. You should learn from older, wiser women/men. You should mentor other young women so that they grow into captivating women,” said Dr Gumbo.
The 105-page book chronicles Dr Gumbo’s life journey, making extensive reference to the Bible.
“While I was in the prayer room, praying and meditating on how to fulfil the call of the Great Commission in my life, I heard the voice of God saying to me, ‘PhD.’”
Indeed, she acquired a doctorate and her story might inspire other young girls to be determined in holding their passions dear. Giving an example of the biblical Mary, Dr Gumbo urged the young women to take care of God’s temples, which are their bodies.
“God is interested in the state of his temple, that is your body. He relies on our bodies to spread the word. Therefore, take care of God’s temple through eating healthy foods, exercising and fleeing away from temptations,” said the author, who is also the founder of Research Hub for Children with Disability (ReHUBCD).
A devout Christian who attends the Celebration Church, Dr Gumbo said that God will only allow you to hold his titles and his possessions if you are righteous.
“You have to be sanctified, set apart for you to qualify to hold his possessions and to be in the same league as other martyrs who are in the hall of faith in Hebrews 11,” she said.
According to the author, proceeds from the sale of her books will benefit ReHUBCD.
“Praying without ceasing has abundant benefits. It connects us to our Maker. Time in prayer is not wasted, it is an investment. Prayer brings you closer to God and He reveals to you his destiny and purpose here on earth.”
Dr Gumbo, who talks about the Great Commission with reference to God’s work that He assigns to the favoured in her book “It’s for You Lord” reckons individuals are defined by the Almighty, not by people.
“He carefully formed you and you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Your success is set. It is a matter of time, but God will never fail you. He does not have a history of failure. Learn from your mistakes and move on,” she said.
Meanwhile, the author added that ReHUBCD will hold a fun and sports day at Boli Primary School in Chiredzi on July 29. The objective of the event is to bring smiles to children living with disabilities in the remote area who will partake in football, athletics, netball, nhodo, drama, poetry and dance among other activities.
Dr Gumbo is a holder of a PhD in Development Studies. She has worked as a policy analyst, as part of national technical working groups composed of Government officials and development partners for the past 18 years.
