Used vehicle import deadline to stay

GOVERNMENT says there will be no further extension to the October 31 deadline banning the import of vehicles more than  five-years-old as sufficient time has been given to all motorists and car dealers.
Transport, Communications and Infrastructural Development Secretary, Mr Partson Mbiriri, yesterday said the statutory instrument giving effect to the regulations was a bitter pill that the country should swallow to avert road carnage.

Addressing journalists on the implications of the regulations, Mr Mbiriri said many lives have been lost due to road carnage.
This, he said, prompted Government to take decisive action.
“I believe this is one bitter pill we have to take as a nation to avert the menace on the roads. We believe we have given people ample warning and I am not aware of any intention to extend the deadline,” said Mr Mbiriri.

Zim polls: No role for UK, EU

PRESIDENT Mugabe says Britain and European Union countries will not observe Zimbabwe’s elections because they  imposed illegal sanctions in clear testimony of their hatred of Zanu-PF.
The two are pleading to be part of observer missions to the country’s polls.

The President however, said the door remained open for re-engagement with the former coloniser now that the Conservatives were in power.

President Mugabe said this while receiving letters of credence from the new British Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mrs Deborah Bronnert at State House yesterday.

Parties speak on WikiLeaks disclosures

ZANU-PF says it will investigate revelations that some of its senior officials supplied damning information about President  Mugabe and the party to United States embassy officials while MDC-T has absolved those who reportedly mocked its leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai.
MDC-T announced yesterday that it had resolved to absolve senior party officials exposed by Wikileaks mocking their leader.
However, Zanu-PF secretary for information and publicity, Cde Rugare Gumbo, on Wednesday implored members of the party named in the cable leaks to start examining their consciences as the party was investigating the matter.
Cde Gumbo said it was disturbing that some senior party  members were implicated in the secret meetings with hostile forces.

“The revelations are disturbing and demoralising. We are studying the issue and we want to see how these things develop, but we have not taken a position as a party. The people should examine their conscience and ask themselves whether what they have done is right or wrong and if it is wrong there is a way of correcting it,” he said.
