A 50-year-old man from Plumtree has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for attempted murder, after he brutally assaulted his 89-year-old neighbour.

In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe said Livanda Ndebele attacked his neighbour three times on the head with an axe.

“The incident occurred when the victim visited a sick friend who shares a home with Ndebele. Ndebele accused the victim of witchcraft and being the source of his family’s misfortunes.

“When the complainant attempted to leave, Ndebele seized an axe and struck him three times on the head before kicking him repeatedly, leaving him unconscious,” reads the statement.

The court sentenced Ndebele to five years imprisonment, suspending two years on condition of good behaviour, meaning he will spend an effective three years in prison.
“Violence should never be the answer to personal disputes. Let’s resolve conflicts peacefully and protect lives,” said the NPA.
