B-METRO COMMENT: Abstinence the way to go

ABSTINENCE, not contraceptives is the only “surefire” way to avoid teenage pregnancies.

Many developing countries are spotlighted by high rates of teenagers falling pregnant and dropping out of school.

According to the United Nations report an estimated 70 000 adolescents in developing countries die each year from complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

The sad reality is many of these pregnancies are as a result of girls being taken advantage of by older men, often called “blessers” and these pregnancies very often result in girls dropping out of school and even being exposed to HIV/ Aids and STIs.

The truth is that adolescent pregnancy is most often not the result of a deliberate choice but rather the absence of choices, and of circumstances beyond a girl’s control.

Many teens today are waiting to have sex. When they do have it, though, most say they’ve used some type of birth control like condoms or pills.

But the not-so-good news is that teens don’t use these popular ways to prevent pregnancy all the time or correctly.

So, you might wonder: What’s the best and easiest type of birth control to help make sure your son or daughter doesn’t become a parent too soon?

In this edition we carried a story where Population Services of Zimbabwe (PSZ) revealed that in their bid to fight teenage pregnancies they are only providing their services to teenagers below 18 years of age when they came in the company of their guardians.

This issue raises the question of what can be done to prevent and lower the rates of teenage pregnancy. In order to prevent teenage pregnancy, teenagers need to have a comprehensive understanding of abstinence, contraceptive techniques, and consequences.

Although there are many different ways to prevent a teenage girl from becoming pregnant, the only one that is absolutely effective is sexual abstinence.

Not having sex, also called abstinence, is the only surefire way to avoid a pregnancy and STD’s.

This method is the only one that guarantees no risk of getting pregnant and protects the teen from getting any STDs.

For many years abstinence has been viewed as a decision based upon a religious or moral belief.

Although abstinence remains the best way to prevent pregnancy among teens, it is a fact that there are still a large number of them who will be involved in sexual relations.

For this reason, it is important that teens be provided with broad information on how to do so responsibly using various contraceptive techniques.

The schools can also do their part by providing the necessary information on preventing pregnancies and by encouraging teens to make responsible choices when having sex. .
