Now that the December festivities are drawing to a close, we would like to applaud our people for the manner in which they have conducted themselves in the many merry making occasions around the country. A
Though we may have had isolated cases of violence at some places, it is quite heartening that on the whole many events, including high profile shows, proceeded without much incident.
There is a tendency, however, for people to go slightly overboard when they celebrate the dawn of a New Year.
Let us mark the New Year with a new culture of restraint and tempered celebration.
Only last month the nation celebrated the dawn of a new era with the ushering in of a new Government, that promised a new way of doing business.
We believe as citizens of this country we also owe it to ourselves to value this country and celebrate responsibly.
We say this because the culture of vandalism during New Year celebrations seemed to take hold of some communities, while fireworks disturb both humans and animals that are traumatised by the noise.
We would like to join the police in calling for calm during the festivities. The way we start the year could signify the way we are going to go through it, with peaceful entry guaranteeing peace throughout 2018.
Let us seek peaceful means of resolving conflict even at family level. We note with concern that while this time of the year families come together to enjoy themselves, for some it is a time to settle scores.
This is quite undesirable since we need each other hence the importance of dialogue in resolving conflict.
The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe has done a wonderful job using various cellphone networks to raise awareness on the importance of safe driving and travelling during the day as opposed to driving at night.
We urge the motoring public to heed such advice to reduce road carnage.
The rising death toll of 15 on Boxing Day(from five last year) is quite worrying and is an indicator that we need to do much more to reduce accidents through behavioural change on our roads.
With the weather quite unpredictable over the past few days, it is quite important for travellers to avoid trying to cross flooded rivers since we have had unnecessary loss of lives over the years due to impatient drivers.
We must proceed only when it is safe to do so.
