B-Metro Comment: Let’s co-operate with police this Trade Fair period

It is that time of the year when Zimbabwe, and Bulawayo in particular, play host to the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair.

The fair usually brings out the best, and sometimes the worst out of visitors and residents of the host city.

We would like to appeal to visitors and residents alike to be at their best behaviour and abide by the laws of the land so that they enjoy their stay in the city and the trade showcase.

We are aware that there are certain people that relocate to the city of Bulawayo for illegal business during the Trade Fair, hence we would like to urge our visitors and fair goers to be on the lookout for suspicious characters and not hesitate to report suspicious activity to the police.

Bulawayo is a beautiful and peaceful city and we welcome both local and foreign business tourists and urge them to sample the city’s tourism sites, the likes of Khami Ruins, Matopos National Park, our various museums and even our oldest suburbs, not to mention the steam trains.

While we pride ourselves with having some of the most generous and kind people the world has ever seen, there could also be bad apples that we should watch out for.

We believe people should use trusted transporters while those intending to change their foreign currency into local currency should be careful not to fall prey to street deals that are usually too good to be true.

Also, seeing that schools are closed, there is a tendency among the youth to be initiated into beer drinking during the trade fair period, leading to instances of violence and even risky behaviour.

Drunkenness has become a major worry during merry making and the ZITF period, especially on closing day, has witnessed terrible behaviour by youth that would have abused alcohol.

This is a time that parents should watch out for their children since even children as young as 10 are sometimes found drunk lying in the streets, or dangerously staggering into traffic around the city.

The drug abuse by the youths exposes them to infections since they may not be in their right minds to make sound decisions especially regarding their sexual behaviour.

Our plea to the young people is that they should realise that they can still have fun without abusing any drugs or drinking themselves silly, only to regret later.

We applaud our police force for always safeguarding our visitors and urge the public to co-operate with law enforcement so that business and fun seekers can still achieve their goals without any trampling on the other’s rights.
