The age that we live in has made so many things that people used to frown upon so acceptable it is quite shocking how our consciences have been seared. A�
The growing trend of normalising the abnormal has turned the institution of marriage, for example, into a big joke for many people. This has turned the young into cynics, critics and some into anti-marriage activists due to the behaviour of married people that the young have observed over the years.
It is the hypocrisy exhibited by those in the institution that has led to this erosion of the reverence to the marriage institution.
Recent reports show that divorce is on the rise and that many parents have no clue how they should be raising their children, a worrying trend that leaves us wondering how worse off the next generation would be in terms of morals.
Elsewhere in this issue we carry a story in which a married man took in a teenage girlfriend during the day while the wife was at work and they were caught resulting in much drama.
There is also the case of the father-in-law that slept with his sona��s wife, a man who impregnated his 15-year-old daughter and another that brings home different women and forces his wife to sleep on the floor and watch them claiming he was doing this to show her how bedroom matters are handled by other women.
You then wonder how those outside the institution are expected to feel and how they are supposed to react when faced with such information of a dysfunctional institution. Is there still respect for the marriage vows? Where is the current generation losing it and how could that be corrected so that the institution is restored?
It is important to note that the marriage or family institution is the primary institution where most of our values and morals are shaped. If we get our parenting wrong, then our children are likely to pick up the wrong lessons from us.
It is also worrying that at a time when Christianity appears to be growing, the statistics on divorce do not appear to be receding. It is quite crucial that more focus is given to teaching on the importance of marriage, family and respect.
Also, sex has been turned into some deity that both young and old appear to be worshipping and its removal from the confines of a normal union of two adults of the opposite sex is creating many problems. We believe we should not be remembered as that generation that smothered the last remnants of the tattered institution of marriage and shirked our parenting responsibilities thereby producing a generation that seems to think life is like a film set.
Let us restore family unity, respect and community ethos of raising our children so that we reduce cases of wayward behaviour now and in the future and above all may all adults lead exemplary lives so that we do not rob our young of an opportunity of learning something from role models.
