B-METRO COMMENT: Let’s stop Honda Fit criminals

CRIMINALS disguised as pirate taxi drivers are now more than a nuisance to society, they are now a threat to our lives.

This week we have a story of siblings who were not only robbed by felons driving a grey Honda Fit, but were forced to perform sexual acts on each other.

They were not only stripped of their hard earned belongs but their dignity.

They will never recover from the ordeal they went through. Counselling may lessen the pain and hasten the recovery but the reality is that brother and sister will never be the same again.

We hope and pray that the police will help them to get all the assistance they require to live normal lives again.

This story clearly shows that the delinquents, who sit behind the wheels of Honda Fits, are becoming more daring in their acts of criminality. They no longer stop at confiscating goods, they now rape, kill and humiliate their victims.

Our feeling is that, in response to the escalating Honda Fit crimes, police can do more to not only catch these criminals, but to prevent them from breaking the law.

Our law enforcing agents must adopt a hardline approach, the powers that be should put more boots on the ground, increase the use of stop and search and incarcerate more offenders with longer jail terms.

Criminals should be afraid and not the law abiding public.

The primary role of the police is to prevent crime, not catch criminals. It is a fact that police have informants who know most of these criminals so it is not asking for too much to urge the police to focus on would-be offenders, likely victims and potential crime hotspots. This will save taxpayers’ money which is wasted on investigations and keep more people safe.

There is no doubt in our minds that most of the criminals that drive Honda Fit cars are persistent offenders so we recommend the police to make it as hard as possible for these reprobates  to commit crimes in the first place.

Much efforts should be targeted at crime hotspots, resources should be used to identify repeat and vulnerable victims of crime and to find out where the most prolific, persistent and dangerous offenders in the community are located.

However, crime prevention is not the sole obligation of the police. Every citizen must play a part in ending these robberies.

If you suspect a neighbour, friend, sibling and enemy of contributing to the increase of Honda Fit crimes then you should be resolute enough to report your suspicions to the police.

Crime fighting can only succeed if and when we all play a part.

You can call those who report crime and criminals “snitches” all you want, but the reality is that there are parts of Zimbabwe where criminality and incivility have become normal, battering the morale of our most vulnerable citizens.

Tomorrow when you are the one at the other end of a gun or knife then you will appreciate the importance of snitching as you call it.

We are not a society of gangsters, this is not gangster paradise or a den of thieves, we don’t celebrate crime in Zimbabwe and we definitely don’t want to see it normalised.

Therefore, let us all play a part in preventing all forms of crime because if we don’t tomorrow it will be you being forced to perform a sexual act on your relative.
