WHITE City Stadium in Bulawayo will further enhance its status as the country’s home of athletics, when it hosts the country’s most prestigious athletics event, the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) inter-provincials finals in May.
The Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) has already started preparing for the meet with the team selection expected to commence at their track and field championships event on Saturday at the same venue.
Bab chairperson Watson Madanyika said as the host province they are hoping to dominate the provincial championships.
“We are excited to be hosting the inter-provincials finals. We have already started preparing for the meeting. We have our Bab track and field championships on Saturday where we are going to start our team selection process for the inter-provincials. On Saturday, our coaches led by Benson Mwanza will begin the team selection. As the host province we want to have a strong squad for the inter-provincials hence it becomes key for our track and field event this weekend to be a selection event for our team,” said Madanyika.
All provinces are expected to take part and those that are unable to field full teams are expected to communicate before the championships so that those slots are given to other athletes, in particular, juniors.
In the past, the inter-provincials have had an international flavour, with regional track and field powerhouse South Africa, Zambia, Botswana and Mozambique participants.
Registration for the Bab track and field championships set for Saturday is set to close tomorrow at 6 pm. The events programme will commence at 8:00am.Events on offer are 100m, 100mh, 110mh, 200m, 400m, 400mh, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay, ZITF CocaCola Four Minute Mile Challenge, long jump, triple, jump, high jump, javelin, shot put, discus. Entry fees are pegged at US$2 per event per athlete for cadets, youths and juniors, US$3 per event per athlete for seniors and US$5 per relay team.
The organisers will provide bib numbers.
