Bab urges athletes to vaccinate, targets herd immunity

THE Bulawayo Athletes Board (Bab) has encouraged all athletes to get vaccinated as achieving herd immunity could be the only way they can return to the track.

Bab chairperson Watson Madanyika said vaccination was the way to go if athletics is to fully return.

“The board is constantly encouraging athletes to use their backyards or indoors to train in anticipation of resumption anytime. We also encourage all our members to be vaccinated since this is the only hope we have to beat the virus. If the country achieves herd immunity, we might get the green light to resume activities,” said Madanyika.

He wished sprinter Ngoni Mukusha as the only Zimbabwean track and field athlete competing in the ongoing Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

“Our message to Makusha is enjoy, learn and relax; this is your time to shine and set your personal best performance or season’s best in the biggest athletics showcase and we wish him good health as he prepares to compete on the 31st of July,” he said.

Makusha, who had struggled to get qualifying events, was given an opportunity to represent the country in the Tokyo through a universality card after the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe was offered the slot by World Athletics and submitted his name.

He is one of three Zimbabweans that benefited from universal slots together with swimmers Donata Katai and Peter Wetzlar, while the duo of rower Peter Purcell-Gilplin and golfer Scott Vincent met the qualifying standards in their respective sport.
