THE organisers of the Harare International Festival of the Arts (Hifa) have moved to reassure arts lovers that the festival’s long-awaited return after an eight-year hiatus is still on track, amid mounting speculation over the event’s status.
Hifa, widely regarded as Zimbabwe’s premier arts festival, is scheduled to make its comeback from August 3 to 9, ending an eight-year absence from the country’s cultural calendar. However, with only days remaining before the proposed opening date, concerns have intensified as organisers are yet to unveil the official programme, venue or performing artists.
The lack of information has fuelled debate on social media, with many followers questioning whether the festival will indeed return this year or if its revival has been delayed once again.
Responding to the growing uncertainty, Hifa public relations representative Tafadzwa Simba confirmed that preparations are progressing as planned and said the organisation will issue an official announcement on Thursday, July 30, outlining the festival’s plans.
“Hifa will make a reveal on Thursday, 30 July 2026,” said Simba.
Hifa has long been celebrated as one of Africa’s leading multidisciplinary arts festivals, bringing together local and international performers in music, theatre, dance, visual arts and spoken word.
Before going on hiatus in 2018, the festival played a significant role in showcasing Zimbabwean creative talent while attracting visitors from across the region.
The forthcoming announcement is expected to provide clarity on the festival’s programme, venues and participating artists, as anticipation continues to build among creatives and festival-goers eager to witness the return of one of Zimbabwe’s most influential cultural events.
