THE city’s boxing enthusiasts are set to enjoy another Bulawayo Amateur Boxing Association (BABA) delivery when the provincial body hosts a tournament at a local hotel tomorrow afternoon.
It promises fireworks after a series of successful events that have been held at the venue since the beginning of the year with national team coaches in attendance.
This will be the fifth tournament to be held in Bulawayo with more than 16 bouts lined up for what is expected to be a competitive afternoon.
The tournament will be used to prepare boxers for the Region Five Games that will be held in December this year.
Veteran trainer Philip “Striker” Ndlovu of Tshaka Club called on boxing fans to come in their numbers to support the pugilists.
“All is set for the BABA tournament, we hope that after hosting successful tournaments before, our fans will continue to show support by coming in their numbers,” he said.
Ndlovu said all Bulawayo clubs would be represented while pugilists from Gweru and Kwekwe are also expected to participate.
“All Bulawayo clubs will be there as well as boxers from Kwekwe and Gweru. We’re expecting exciting bouts from the girls’ category as well,” said Ndlovu.
Boxers from Bulawayo clubs – Nketa, Zimbabwe National Army, Nkulumane, Tshaka, Lobengula, Luveve’s Percy Ibboston, HQ One Brigade, Young Arts and Bulawayo West will battle it out in different weight divisions.
Boxing board vice chairperson Ezwell Ndlovu appealed to the corporate world to sponsor boxing.
