TWO babies drowned when they fell into buckets of water in separate incidents in the Midlands, police confirmed. A seven-month-old baby boy from Mkoba Village Seven in Gweru rolled from his mother’s bed on Monday afternoon and plunged into a bucket of water. “The infant was left sleeping on the bed when the mother went out to wash nappies. It is alleged that the boy later rolled from the bed and fell into a 20-litre bucket which was full of water,” Midlands police spokesman Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said.

He said when the boy’s mother returned to the room, the baby had already drowned.  Insp Mahoko said on the same day in Gokwe North, an 18-month-old baby boy drowned in a bucket of water while playing with his five-year-old sister.

“The now deceased boy, Prosper Magara was left at home under the care of his five-year-old sister while the mother went to work in the fields,” he said.

“When the mother returned  she found the baby struggling to get out of the bucket of water and she pulled him out but unfortunately the boy later died,” he said.
