Baby (2) drowns in well

A TWO-YEAR-OLD baby from Endimimbili Two Village in Lupane district drowned after falling into a well while its mother was fetching water.
Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Eglon Nkala yesterday confirmed the incident, which was reported at Lupane Police Station.

“I confirm the incident which happened on 23 July at Elliot Mpofu’s homestead in Endimimbili Two Village, Gomoza under Chief Mabhikwa.
“At around 10am, the mother Lorraine Mpofu (20) went to fetch water with two-year-old Bekithemba Ndlovu at the borehole.

“She left the child to play unattended while she went home to leave some water,” said Insp Nkala.
He said when she came back to fetch more water the baby had drowned in a nearby well.

“The police attended the scene and a post-mortem was waived in Lupane. No foul play is suspected as investigations have been concluded,” said Asst Insp Nkala.

He advised parents to desist from leaving infants to play alone without supervision and discouraged the public letting children near water sources.
