A one-year-old baby tumbled into a 20-litre bucket and drowned at his rural home in Zenka area in Nkayi on Friday, police have confirmed.
Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Siphiwe Makonese identified the infant as Andile Mpofu. She said the one-year-four-months-old baby was playing while his mother was washing plates outside their bedroom hut.
“Andile Mpofu was playing outside while his mother, Nomaqhawe Masilela, 24, was washing some plates around 11:30AM on Friday,” Asst Insp Makonese said.
She said Masilela left the baby playing alone outside and went into the hut.
“Andile fell into the bucket and was unable to get out. His mother came back and found him in the bucket and was unresponsive when she pulled him out. She rushed him to Nkayi District Hospital where he was pronounced dead as the medical staff members were preparing to transfer him to Mpilo Central Hospital,” said Asst Insp Makonese.
She said the baby’s body was at Nkayi Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
