‘Baby-making machine’ offers US$15 for child support

A HARARE woman has claimed her former husband is a baby-making machine.

She is demanding US$100 in child support.

Chipo Kwaramba told the court that her ex-husband, Cephas Mapfumo, was refusing to take care of their one-year-old baby.

“He is a builder and goes around making babies and ends up neglecting them. He doesn’t even take birth certificates for them, but goes and looks for another victim.

“Our child needs food and diapers, which are very expensive, but he doesn’t help in any way.

“He ignores my calls,” she said.

Mapfumo offered US$15 and said he was unemployed and could barely make ends meet.

He said Kwaramba applied for maintenance just to fix him after he refused to reconcile with her.

“I have three other children and make about US$70 since I remarried and I’m paying US$40 in rent, which leaves me with nothing.

“My best offer is US$15,” he said.

Magistrate Sharon Mashavira ordered Mapfumo to pay US$25 and take birth certificates of all his children.
