Bachelors’ auction comes to town

It has become so common among single women that you would be forgiven for thinking that all the good guys are either taken or have vacated to another planet
However, it being the 21st century where the Internet has successfully shrunk the world into a global village, people are being connected from all parts of the world.

Back to our cliché, where have all the single men gone to?
We do not know, but look them up yourself.
Yes, you read it right, there was an auction for bachelors in Harare and ladies were paying.

It was evident from the attendance that it is not only happening in Western countries but even in Zimbabwe women are now more daring. They are standing their ground, taking the bull by the horns and initiating dates.
The mood was just right, with a red and black theme that gave the evening romantic feel.

The icing on the cake was the eye candy the ladies in the crowd got when a dozen of guys walked down the walk way looking sleek.
That was exactly what happened last weekend at Gecko Gardens in Harare’s leafy Highlands suburb. Single ladies flocked to the venue, cash in hand, to get a chance to buy a date with some of Harare’s eligible bachelors.

There were 12 bachelors at the auction including Larry Kwirirai of Power FM, Josh, a software engineer, Tino, a graphic designer, and Outspoken, a project manager of Pamberi Trust.
Oddly enough, from the 12 bachelors, some did not even get a single bid and the organisers had to come to their rescue.
Bidding for dates started from as low as US$20 going up and the highest bid was US$120 for Tehn Diamond, a hip-hop artiste who thought he was initially not up for auction. He had to be called after the

ladies requested to have him under the hammer.
The ladies got swept off their feet by the “hunk” but unsurprisingly, he was auctioned for the most money and no one cared if he was attached or not.
To put your minds at rest, Tehn Diamond did it in the name of charity and all he was offering was nothing more than a date.

Ladies’ different tastes were catered for, considering that from the guys’ portfolios, they came from different backgrounds and had different careers.
Although all was done in the name of charity with the main organiser, Rudo Ngululu of The Art of Being Human Foundation, stressing that they aimed to hit two birds with one stone.
“We connect people so that they may input resources they have in order to help the underprivileged members of the society.

“We were aiming to raise funds in the form of a bachelor auction that would link up singletons in the city. We chose this kind of event because it is more interesting. We want to show single women in Zimbabwe that there are single men who are a viable option for relationships instead of dating married men and becoming small houses,” she said.

Another organiser, Kudzi Vee, reiterated that although all they were trying to do was link up the singletons and winning a bid, this did not guarantee marriage with the guys.
“It’s a new concept and people are slowly coming around the idea. It is all about getting a date and what happens next is entirely up to them.

“If there is chemistry who knows? After all we went around scouting for single guys of all ages and we made sure that they were genuinely single and interested in relationships,” she said.
Events at the auction were dramatic as most of the ladies shied away from the Press and one gentleman who refused to be named expressed his disappointment on the women’s choice of guys at the auction.
“It is funny how the ladies are opting for looks instead of other important features like a person’s background. They were bidding the most money for model like material instead of security. Their priorities are not right, no wonder they are single” he said.
It was not easy to see why the gentleman felt this way because at one point during the auction the ladies had to scramble for the “pretty boy” Tehn Diamond.
What can we say, that is just a day in the lives of singletons in Harare.
