“NINJA President” Winky D is proving to be a talent in his own league as he is now associated with top drawer acts, but is also showing signs of a person with a bad ego, which cannot be tamed. His performance during the Lion Lager Campus Nights gig in Bulawayo at Hartsfield ground last week proved that the artiste though talented, was taking his fans for granted.
He showcased his rich talent in a two-hour performance that mesmerised his audience and left many agreeing that he is the king of dancehall and his talent is next to none.
Fans however, endured three hours waiting for him to come on stage. This was not the first time Winky D had shown up late for a gig.
This was not the first time for Winky D to come late for a show.
He did the same last year at a gala in Harare, as well as at Mavado’s show last year again, where he almost fought with Sniper, after coming late. His coming late interfered with Sniper’s show time, as his band took more time on stage leading to other musicians failing to perform.
A few years ago, he refused to take to the stage at Ibumba Arts Festival, as he wanted a full payment, although he had agreed with the promoter that he would get his balance after the show. He also failed to perform at President Mugabe’s inauguration last month.
As the list of his misdeeds grows, it should be noted that he also absconded during his scheduled performance with Jamaican group T.O.K, which he wrote a song about. Winky D has ditched many shows at the last minute.
As the Bible says in Proverbs, “pride goes before the fall of a nation,” this is one verse the Ninja President Winky Dee should really consider before his ego destroys the “Ninja nation” he has built.
Some of his fans did not take kindly to his behaviour and said it was high time the artiste cleans his act.
“This guy is taking us for granted. He might be the Ninja President and we might be the Ninjas, but he has to respect us because we make him what he is,” said a fan who identified himself as Ronald.
In an interview the Ninja President’s manager Jonathan Banda defended him saying people should understand that he sometimes gets delayed by different factors and it is wrong to assume Winky D has grown big headed.
“We are all human and wherever we have appeared late, it would be due to factors beyond our control,” he said.
Banda thanked fans for sticking with Winky and continuing to support him even after bad things have been said about the musician.
“There are some people who are working hard to label him as an uncooperative person, but that is wrong. We work with those who want to work with us and those who try to understand us. We travel a lot and wherever we go, we deliver, that is what people should be talking about not to look at the negatives about Winky,” he said.
Banda attributed Winky D’s success to hard work, perseverance as well as focus and said his client is ready to work with other musicians as long as they are serious with music.
“We did not start like this, we had to work hard especially him, in order to get where we are now. Looking at what he has achieved, he has contributed a lot to the music scene,” he said.
Speaking to fans during the show Winky D who also calls himself “Ghetto Elder,” explained what it meant to be a Ninja.
“You hear people saying, we are violent that’s why we call ourselves maNinja, but that is not it. Being a Ninja means you are a hard worker, you do not give up easily and you always achieve what you set out for yourself.
Let our haters talk, but they are the ones we are here to show what we are made of. We do not give up easily and we are not easily broken,” he said.
