Badenhorst receives honourable accolades

FLORIDA Tech’s Zimbabwean Ray Badenhorst continued to earn post season accolades as the Golf Coaches Association of America announced its annual NCAA Division II PING All-America Teams last week. Badenhorst joins fellow countrymen Scott Vincent who was named in the team during the season but the former Banket resident was given All-American Honorable Mention.

Badenhorst was honoured together with Justin Kalanquin also from Florida Tech the Panthers last week.

Badenhorst earned the individual championship at the Panther Invitational, shooting a second round 65 which matched the lowest round to par in program history at seven-under-par.

The Banket, Zimbabwe native earned SSC Men’s Golfer of the Week honors once and recorded the best scoring average in program history this season at 72.72 over 32 rounds played.

Kalanquin’s scoring average of 73.03 was the third best average in program history.

Both Badenhorst and Kalanquin helped the Panthers earn home victories at the Full Moon Invitational, and the Panther Invitational.

They also helped the squad earn nine top 10 finishes over 11 tournaments.

Overall, a total of 15 Sunshine State Conference student-athletes were honoured. Florida Tech is also home to Brett Krog who is also in the same team with Badenhorst.

Krog who took part in the manicaland amateur played in four tournaments as a sophomore as well as 12 total rounds with a scoring average 75.50 which four rounds count towards the team score.

He had three rounds of even-par or better and recorded a season best two-under-par 70 as an individual at the Panther Invitational on March 17.

Meanwhile Greg Bentley is the only local professional who has entered the Vodacom Vodacom Origins of Golf presented by Samsung Qualifier  set for Euphoria Golf Estate and  Hydro on June 24.
