Ngonidzashe Mhinda, the Eagle Wings spokesperson, said preparations for next month’s competition are at advanced stage and they are looking forward to hosting a successfull event.
“We will begin the season with an Open tournament where we are inviting players from different clubs to come and take part in the event.
“The event will be played in singles, doubles and mixed doubles formats. Preparations for this event are well on course and we expect a good turnout as some players are already practising at different venues.
“We have already send some invitations to clubs like Chegutu Airfoce, Manyame Airbase and Sunrise Sports Club. In fact, the uniformed forces have supported the sport in a big way and during this year, we would like to stage many events.”
Mhinda said said registration for participants will be done on the day of the event. He also said the move by the Harare City Council to offer the sport a training venue was also seen as a welcome move as the facilities were a limiting factor to them for quite sometime.
“We are happy that we now have some trainning facilities as we try to revive the sport, which needs so much support. The US$5 participation fee each player will help the club to pay to the council for the facilities which will be used during the event.
Lack of funding has for several years affected the sport and hopefully this year there will be a change of fortune and we will see the corporate world coming on board,” he said.
