A BAKERS Inn driver appeared in court for stealing property worth about $400 from a 72-year-old granny.
Bheki Dlomo, 39, of Bulawayo’s Old Magwegwe suburb stole a TV set, a pair of school shoes and two cell phones from Opha Dlomo-Makama.
He told a court he used a key to open a door to the house because he knew where the old woman kept her keys.
Dlomo appeared before West commonage provincial magistrate Abednico Ndebele facing a theft charge.
He pleaded guilty to stealing some property but denied taking two cell phones.
Ndebele sentenced him to three years imprisonment. However, he will serve two and a half years after Ndebele suspended six months on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next three years.
Dlomo said: “I knew where she used to put her keys and I took the keys under a brick. I unlocked the door to gain entry. I took her property to keep it by my side.”
He told the court he was related to Makama and he used to live with her.
Dlomo said he was a driver at Bakers Inn.
However, Dlomo-Makama told the court that they were not related.
“I met him this year. I trusted him because we share the same surname. He told me that he was a prison guard. He was a tenant at my neighbour’s house,” she said.
Prosecuting, Mufaro Mageza said on November 29, 2015 at around 7AM, Dlomo entered Dlomo-Makama’s house and took a 72 inch TV set, a pair of school shoes and two cell phones.
