THE Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) is set to complete the construction of mobile network base stations in Bambadzi, Bulilima District, Matabeleland South Province, within the next two months.
The project aims to address long-standing connectivity challenges in the area, which has historically relied on weak and unreliable network signals from neighbouring Botswana. This has resulted in exorbitant roaming charges and persistent difficulties in accessing a stable connection.
However, a new chapter is unfolding for the Bambadzi community. After years of advocacy and grassroots mobilisation, Potraz has committed to extending network infrastructure to the village. Construction is already underway, with the base stations expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
Deputy Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Dingumuzi Phuti, said the development forms part of the Government’s broader efforts to ensure nationwide network connectivity, particularly in border regions.
“This is an ongoing project initiated by the Second Republic, to ensure that all peripheral areas of the country enjoy the same ubiquitous connectivity as their central, inland and urban counterparts. In the recent past, we faced challenges in border areas, where our citizens had to depend on foreign networks, such as those from South Africa in Beitbridge, or Mozambique in the eastern parts of the country.
“Relying on foreign networks is becoming a thing of the past, as Government continues deploying base stations in those areas. Last year, we installed a tower under the Universal Services Fund (USF), which now serves Jirazi and remote parts of Beitbridge. Two years ago, NetOne upgraded a base station at Shashe, and a new base station is being constructed at Mulambapele in Filabusi,” said Deputy Minister Phuti.
He emphasised that the focus on targeting remote areas aligns with President Mnangagwa’s mantra of “leaving no one and no place behind”.
“Zimbabweans will soon enjoy uninterrupted access to Zimbabwean mobile networks. This is the vision that His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa has for all of us, realised through the Ministry of ICT and the broader telecommunications sector,” said the Deputy Minister.
Bambadzi Ward 10 Councillor, Sikhumbuzo Dube, said the installation of a local base station will significantly uplift the lives of residents.
“As the Bambadzi community, we welcome this development. Being situated on the border with Botswana, we have long struggled to access local networks.
“Relying on foreign networks is not only unreliable but also limits our access to essential services. The availability of a local network will improve healthcare delivery, education and stimulate business in the area,” said Councillor Dube. — @mthabisi_mthire
