MOSES ‘Bambo’ Chunga turns 60 this year, a milestone he reflects with sobering clarity.
“I am turning 60 years old soon; nobody lives forever on earth,” said Bambo.
Chunga is one of the most celebrated football talents to ever emerge in the country.
In Belgium, he is a legend too, a revered one, and has made countless trips in recent years to catch up and experience what modern football means.
He has seen it all and lived it all, both as a player and a coach, but he hopes for a change to elevate football for future generations.
Bambo slams local football administrators for empty promises, from infrastructure development to governance.
“The problem we have with our football is that people are thinking through the stomach. Our administrators need to walk the talk now. We are in 2025, but our football looks a whole century behind.
“Look at the infrastructure, and everything related, it’s not what it should be,” said Bambo.
He also called out people with links to older clubs for resisting the emergence of new, ambitious clubs.
“It’s funny how every ambitious side that comes into the top-flight easily gets names in some form of disrespect,” he said.
“Many are trying to discredit Scottland. But the owner, Scott Sakupwanya has done so much for football in a short space of time that deserves to be applauded.
He added:
“I also remember when FC Platinum came, people also called them moneybags.
“But football all over the world needs money. It’s not just buttons you can promise people with – football needs money.
“Let’s embrace the game changers in our midst and bring positivity around our football, not negativity.
“We have been having fake sponsors in our football for quite a long time, but all those need to be rectified.
“It starts with our administration. But let it be known, you can never achieve with the same mentality that got you where you are.
Currently, Bambo is the head coach of Northern Region Soccer League side, Chegutu Pirates. The league is one of the most competitive and well-run in the first-tier divisions.
Bambo returned to the technical dugout after years on the sidelines and has been slowly rebuilding the side.
After match day 20, Chegutu Pirates are in 14th position with 20 points.
N’ombeyawora are sitting at the top of the log standings with 44 points, separated with second-placed Agama on goal difference.
Chegutu Pirates are set to host MWOS U-19 at Pfupajena on Saturday. Club assistant coach Ernest Gava is optimistic of a positive result.
“We are expecting good results because we are at home. Normally, we play good football when we’re on home ground.
“Our target is to stay in Division One this year because we are building a strong and competitive team.
“We also have a good age structure in our squad, which gives us confidence for the future,” said Gava.
