Bamboo art woman turns to mbira music

rehearsing with her five- member group.
She is set to release her six-track album titled “Respect” later this month.

Boettrich described her move as normal to any serious artist.
“Art is a reflection of perception and this statement is an apt description of my talent in doing everything.
“I know I make bamboo wares but music is also something that I am capable of doing.

“I decided to expand my artistic prowess into music just like what Brian Mteki, the stone sculptor did,” she said.
Boettrich said venturing into music will not affect her first love – making bamboo objects.
“I am not quitting my bamboo art, you know I have many people who love my wares and if I stop it, I will have created a yawning gap in the market,” she said.

Asked about why she chose mbira music over other genres, the soft-spoken Boettrich said was passionate about the instrument.
“I grew up in a traditional background where my father and his friends used to play mbira at home and this is when I fell in love with the instrument.
“I couldn’t find time to engage in music because of other commitments until last year, when I realised that time was ripe for me to take up music. I bought the instruments in Mbare and we will very soon release an

album,” she said.
The artiste made the headlines in 2009 when her bamboo necklaces, seat covers, earrings, hats and bags made a mark on the market.

In the past two years, Boettrich’s wares have illuminated the Harare International Festival of the Arts. She has also exhibited in countries like Germany, USA and Eritrea.
Born in Biriviri Village, Chimanimani, Boettrich ventured into bamboo art in 2008 after getting inspiration from her mother.
