Bamusi rediscovers form

PHINEAS BAMUSI is rediscovering his form and is dreaming of seeing CAPS United finish strongly in the league as well as fight for Chibuku Super Cup glory.

The 33-year-old looked to have come off the boil for most of last year and the better part of the opening half this season.

But the journeyman winger has since reinvigorated himself in the game, showing a lot of stuff he flaunted at the peak of his powers.

And everything is just working out for the former Harare City star with Makepekepe getting a lot of value from his flashing wing-play, which has manufactured almost half of the goals the Green Machine have scored in their six-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Bamusi ruthlessly unleashed his powers against Highlanders in a Premiership match in which Lloyd Chitembwe’s troops came from behind for a 3-2 victory at Rufaro.

With the guests holding the match by its neck for most of the 90 minutes, having led 2-1 at the break, Bamusi took the matter into his own hands and overran the Bosso defence to grab two assists and ensure Makepekepe continued treading the purple patch.

While the evasive winger, who won the league title with CAPS United in 2016, is keen to see the Green Machine clip a top-four finish in the league, he is primarily concerned with winning the Chibuku Super Cup.

He won it once with Triangle when he almost single-handedly drove the Lowveld team to the podium when the relegated side beat Harare City 2-0 at Gibbo in 2018.

And he is eager to see CAPS United winning it for the first time, at least since the re-inception of the competition in 2013, and give themselves a chance to play in the CAF Confederation Cup.

After skipping over Bikita Minerals in the first round, Makepekepe are bracing for a much bigger test against former winners and three-time runners-up Ngezi Platinum Stars in the last eight at Baobab on Saturday.

“First of all, I would like to thank my coach, Lloyd Chitembwe. He understands his players and knows how to get the best out of them, and I would like to salute him for that,” said Bamusi.

“I tell you; I endured a lot of frustration last season and that was the worst time I have seen in my career.

“I was terribly off my bearings, and it was hard.

“But the coach was very patient with me, and he even recommended a contract extension for me.

“I am happy that I am getting back to my best and enjoying the game again. I am trying hard, and my teammates are equally trying their best as well.

“The ambition is to be able to finish the season strongly, maybe in the top four if we can be consistent. But we really want to taste glory in the Chibuku Super Cup.

“Ngezi Platinum Stars are a very good side, but we are going there to try and win. Everyone in the group is keen to succeed in the Chibuku Super Cup”.

Bamusi is not the only CAPS United player looking to win a second Chibuku Super Cup as Ralph Kawondera and Rodwell Chinyengetere are also dreaming of attaining the same while William Manondo can win it for the third time if CAPS United are successful having picked it twice with Harare City.

Chikubu Super Cup quarter-final fixtures:

Saturday: Ngezi Platinum Stars v CAPS United (Baobab), Manica Diamonds v FC Platinum (Sakubva)

Sunday: Simba Bhora v Highlanders (Wadzanayi)

Dynamos v Yadah (Postponed)
