Bangladesh women qualify for ICC World T20

THE Bangladesh women’s cricket team beat Zimbabwe’s women by 31 runs at the Terdthai cricket ground in Bangkok, Thailand, yesterday to reach the final of the International Cricket Council World T20 qualifiers.

Bangladesh will take on Ireland in the final tomorrow. The Irish women beat Scotland by nine wickets in the other semi-final.

The finalists have qualified for the ICC Women’sWorld T20 to be held in India next year.

Fargana Hoque and Rumana Ahmed set the stage for the Bangladesh victory as the tigresses posted 89 for five after electing to bat.

They slipped to 10 for three before Fargana (43) and Sharmin Akhter (22) stitched a 51-run recovery stand for the fourth wicket. Fargana is the top-scorer of the tournament so far with 94 runs.

Barring the two, no other Bangladesh batter managed to reach double-digits.

In reply, the bowlers took wickets regularly and skittled out Zimbabwe for just 58.

Bangladesh gave away 10 runs in extras while Pellagia Mujaji (10) was the only Zimbabwean to manage a double digit score.

Rumana was the pick of the Bangladeshi bowlers with 4-8 in four overs while Fahima Khatun and Shaila Sharmin chipped in with two wickets each.

Before this, Bangladesh had participated in the Women’s World T20 in 2014 when they qualified automatically as hosts. – Online
