Banned cough syrup woman acquitted

Sunday News Reporter

A Gweru woman who was in 2020 arrested after allegedly being found in possession of boxes of a banned cough syrup was later acquitted by a Gweru magistrate.

She appeared in court facing charges of illegal possession of unregistered medicines in violation of the Medicine and Allied Substances Control Act.

According to Midlands court documents, Sarah Shopera was found not guilty of possessing unregistered medicine and was acquitted in September 2022.

Allegations brought before the court were that Shopera, from Mkoba in Gweru, was found with five-and-a-half boxes containing 275 x 100ml bottles of unregistered cough syrup.

However, the state could not prove in court that she was the guilty person.
