Pietermaritzburg — A well-known Pietermaritzburg businessman died on Sunday after shooting his wife and turning the gun on himself.One-time bar owner Skhumbuzo Hlela, popularly known as Madlula, allegedly shot his wife Nonku at least four times in the early hours of Friday morning at their home near Richmond.
He then he turned the gun on himself. He died in hospital on Sunday. Nonku, who was reportedly shot in the neck, is still in a critical condition in hospital.
Hlela previously owned a trendy night spot in Pietermaritzburg called Madlula’s, which he has since sold. He also owned a Scottsville guesthouse.
People who knew the couple said his wife is a young and very beautiful woman. He apparently left his first wife for her. “He was married before, and he left his wife for this younger wife that he has now shot,” one friend said.
Police spokesperson Jay Naicker confirmed that the police were investigating a case of attempted murder and an inquest docket had been opened. He said the couple were found with gunshot wounds at their Honeywood farm. The firearm used in the shooting was found at the scene.
“The incident happened on Friday and the husband died this [yesterday] morning,” said Naicker.
He added that the motive for the shooting is unknown. — Sapa
