BARING Primary School won the Mountaineers Cricket Junior Schools Festival played at Mutare Sports Club on Tuesday. The side went into the finals against Chirowakamwe and won by seven wickets. Mountaineers Cricket area manager Farai Chari said the intention of the festival was to try and spread the game at junior level. Six junior schools that participated during the five over a-side cricket festival include Sheni, Mutare Junior, Chirowakamwe, Baring, John Cowie and Mutanda.  “There were flashes of talent displayed during festival and going in the schools third term, we will host a big tournament that will draw several junior schools from all over the province. Such platforms and exposure are very important for cricket development,” said Chari.

Chari said despite lack of resources in schools, the recent inclusion of primary schools like Mutarazi, Murahwa, 3 Brigade and Elles Group of Schools in the Mountaineers junior cricket developmental programme was a positive development. The final match was, however, played as 10-over match.

Baring won the toss and bowled first, restricting Chirowakamwe to 80-runs in their allotted 10-overs. They powered to victory by seven wickets. Chari, however, said throughout the schools holiday Mountaineers Cricket will be conducting a cricket school programme.

“We will start conduct the cricket school programme in phases starting August 12 to 15, next phase on 17 to 21 and the last phase from 24 to 28,” said Chari.
