Bassist Irvine Tinotenda Topodzi known as Mayaya in the band 2Nice led by Agga Nyabinde has become a darling of many who follow the band religiously.

Those who follow the band can relate to echoes of the pulse behind the name Mayaya which is often chanted at intervals during performances.

The name Mayaya came from church as Irvine could not stop talking. It stuck and got popularised when he joined the band delighting fans with every string and strum.

In an interview Mayaya who has played with the late legendary Bob “headmaster” Nyabinde before joining his son Agga to form 2Nice band said his journey with the Nyabindes has been a rewarding experience.

“I met Agga in 2014 at church while playing the bass and he was on lead. Fascinated by my technique and style of play he approached me to join his band,” he said.

“I was equally impressed with him on the guitar and secretly admired him. Little did I know he would become family.”

After making an offer to Mayaya, Agga went back to school and so did Mayaya who was 19 at that time. However, his talent enticed the headmaster (Bob) to look for him.

“I played with ‘Mdara’ Bob at Savanna Drive Band for about four years before Agga came back to fulfill his promise,” he said/.

“Being part of such a team at my age was a learning curve for me ‘mdara’ nurtured and showed me the ropes.

“I remember him paying my first fees at the University of Zimbabwe. His approval of me was on another level. The man had unconditional love and I see traits of that in Agga also.

“Being with the band then is a memory I treasure and hold so dear. I found comfort as they treated me like family.”.

Man on a mission brother from another father Agga returned to make do on the promise made four years ago rekindling his bromance with Mayaya.

“Coming back as a graduate ‘Mukoma’ Agga was enthusiastic and passionate you could see the fire burning in his eyes. He was poised for a great start.

“It was then when 2Nice was born. I was the first band member then we later on went to find a drummer and keyboardist.”

Mayaya appreciated the loving kindness experienced through the hands of the Nyabinde family who took him in as one of their own despite having no family ties.

“Having played for both father and son I must say, I really am grateful for the love they have shown me,” he said.

“Agga has shown me unwavering support since we met. He has seen me through a lot of trials and tribulations and helped me weather certain storms.

Mayaya has been with 2Nice band since its inception in 2017 and has played on four albums. He recalled his journey with the Nyabinde’s has been more than just about music.

“The experience goes well beyond rehearsals and performances. I have mutually become part of the family,” he said.

“We operate as one big happy family, with each band member contributing to the growth and success of the band.”
