Battle lines have been drawn as several musicians fight for top honours on tonight’s prestigious Radio Zimbabwe Top 50 and the Television Video of the Year competitions.
For a number of years Coca Cola has hosted the competition that saw several musicians, listeners and viewers winning numerous prices.
Last year Leonard Zhakata pocketed $2 000 after two of his songs, “Dhonza Makomborero” and “Dollar Boy”, topped the competition while Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave, Jah Prayzah and Amara Brown also won.
This year, Blessing Shumba, Killer T, Jah Prayzah, Reverend Togarepi Chivaviro and Mike Ngwaze are likely to win the competition.
Tonight’s competition and excitement will usher most Zimbabweans into the New Year as top musicians have been doing well with their songs and albums.
Interestingly, Zimdancehall is also claiming its space on the map as some of the musicians have released songs that became favourites of many people.
Shumba, who is widely tipped to get the top position, has been topping Coca Cola Radio Zimbabwe’s “Top 20” for more than nine months with his song “Chimwe neChimwe” while Killer T’s “Chikorobho”, Jah Prayzah’s “Eriza”, Mike Ngwaze’s “Zvandigumbura” and Rev Chivaviro’s “Ebenezer” have been popular.
The winner will go away with $1 200, second placed ($800) while the third placed will go home with $500.
Listeners who will correctly predict the winners will also have the chance to win electrical gadgets such as TVs, home theatres, cell phones and power banks.
Best gospel, dancehall, sungura and jibilika songs will also be honoured on the day.
To make the competition more exciting, organisers will give prices to viewers who will correctly predict the Video of the Year winners.
They will walk away with several electrical devices such as 50-inch, 42-inch and 32-inch television sets, cell phones and power banks.
