The King of Dancehall contest that takes place at City Sports Centre on December 6 is billed to be a clash of high-density suburbs. Organisers of the event said they had lined up dancehall musicians from various ghettos in the country and classified them according to their residential areas.
Tawanda Chingara of Red Rose Entertainment, who are organising the gig, said music fans should rally behind artistes from their areas during the contest.
“The contest is likely to be exciting because people from the ghettos will come and rally behind artistes from their areas. The overall winner will determine which ghetto in the country rules in the dancehall circle,” said Chingara.
Winner of the contest will walk away with R10 000 while the second and third runners-up get R5 000 and R2 500 respectively.
From Mbare comes She Calaz, Kinnah and Soul Jah Love while Trinta, Hevandah and Botol Killer represent Mufakose. Highfield will be represented by Shinsoman while from Glen Norah would be Jiggaz and Spiderman.
Musicians from Chitungwiza ghettos will form one team featuring Guspy Warrior, Ricky Fire, Softaz and Kaplaz.
Other ghettos represented at the contest include Kuwadzana, Mabvuku, Warren Park and Budiriro. Some musicians will also come from Gweru, Bindura and Kwekwe. Chingara said some of the big names in the dancehall industry had declined to take part in the clash.
“The contest would have been interesting if some of the big artistes in dancehall had not refused to take part. The artistes said they no longer contest at dancehall clashes because they are big names. However, the truth is that most of these musicians are afraid of being outclassed by upcoming dancehall stars that are always determined to steal the show.”
