Bayern Munich wants Wenger?

Arsene Wenger is the top candidate for the vacant Bayern Munich job following the sacking of Niko Kovac. 

Bundesliga giants Bayern are looking for a new manager after sacking Kovac on Sunday following their humiliating 5-1 defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt last time out. 

The 70-year-old former Arsenal boss is the favoured choice of Bayern’s hierarchy as they look for a candidate capable of reviving their season and handling big-name players.

The legendary ex-Premier League boss, who is fluent in German, has been without a job since stepping down at Arsenal at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.

The Frenchman has always insisted his desire is to return to coaching at the elite level and on Tuesday, he threw his hat into the ring for the Bayern post.

“Of course,” replied the 70-year-old when asked if he would be interested in the Allianz Arena job. 

“Coaching is what was my whole life until now. Everybody who has coached will tell you the same. You miss the intensity but some things you miss a lot, some things you don’t miss. I enjoy the things I don’t miss too much.

“But on the other hand, football games, winning football games, preparing the team for the game, and getting satisfaction and shared emotions. That is something that you miss.

“So of course, yes. I was responsible from 33 years of age and I coached until 69 without interruption. And at a top level.

“It’s 36 years without stopping. Even if I miss it, to get out of that pressure for a year was not too bad for me. People who know me well say I’m more relaxed — and it’s true.’

Wenger spent 22 years in north London after joining from Nagoya Grampus Eight back in 1996.

He would go on to win three Premier League titles and a record-breaking seven FA Cups with Arsenal.  

Ralf Rangnick, who had been considered a rival for the Bayern post, is understood to be out of the running.

The 61-year-old former RB Leipzig coach has also been pushed to Manchester United as a potential replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, however, United are standing by their Norwegian boss for now with the aim to bolster his squad in January.
