BAZ bans churches, sangoma adverts

Airing of advertising content from churches and traditional healers has been banned with immediate effect, the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has said.

In a letter to broadcasters, BAZ said the move aims to safeguard the public from misleading information and ensure that broadcasters adhere to ethical standards in their programming.

“This letter serves to remind you of the Authority’s directive to all broadcasters to stop the broadcasting of advertising content from churches and traditional healers and of traditional herbs and medicines which cannot be authenticated since they tend to mislead the public,” reads part of the letter.

However, BAZ said discussion programmes or debates on these topics are not prohibited, as long as they do not contain advertising content.
