THE Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) says preparations for the Annual Broadcasters’ Convention 2026 are at an advanced stage ahead of the two-day gathering scheduled for June 17 and 18 at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Bulawayo.

The convention will run under the theme, “Shaping the Future of Broadcasting: Sustainability, Innovation and Collaborative Regulation in a Disruptive Media Landscape.”

The event is expected to bring together broadcasters, content creators, policymakers, technology innovators, regulators, academics, advertisers, investors and development partners from Zimbabwe and beyond to discuss the future of the broadcasting industry.

Speaking on behalf of the regulator’s Corporate Communications and Public Relations department, BAZ Acting Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Matthias Chakanyuka, said preparations were progressing smoothly.

“Preparations are progressing well, with speaker confirmations, delegate registrations, exhibition arrangements, logistics, and programme development nearing completion,” said Eng Chakanyuka.

He said the convention had generated significant interest from local, regional and international stakeholders, reflecting growing concern and interest in the future of broadcasting as the industry adapts to rapid technological change and digital transformation.

The convention will focus on key issues shaping the sector, including the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in broadcasting, digital transformation, content monetisation, media sustainability, audience engagement, platform convergence and local content development.

Participants will engage through keynote presentations, expert panel discussions, specialised masterclasses for content creators and engineers, as well as exhibitions and networking sessions showcasing emerging broadcasting technologies.

“International participation is also expected, providing opportunities for knowledge exchange and the sharing of global best practices,” said Eng Chakanyuka.

According to BAZ, the convention seeks to facilitate dialogue on the future of broadcasting in Zimbabwe and the region, while exploring opportunities and challenges presented by AI, digital technologies and evolving media platforms.

The gathering will also focus on promoting innovation, strengthening industry competitiveness and sustainability, fostering collaboration among stakeholders and reviewing policy frameworks required to support a modern and inclusive broadcasting ecosystem.

BAZ said the convention forms part of its broader mandate to promote a vibrant, diverse and sustainable broadcasting sector that contributes to national development, cultural expression, information dissemination and economic growth.

The regulator believes the event will provide a platform for stakeholders to chart a common vision for the future of broadcasting in an increasingly disruptive and technology-driven media environment.
