BBA league kicks off on high note

THE Bulawayo Basketball Association (BBA) 2016/17 League kicked off on a high note with defending champions Southern Mavericks beating Oilers 57-46 at Khanyisile Sports Centre on Saturday.

BBA secretary-general Howard Phangwana said fans should expect a tougher competition this year, as most teams had improved their style of play.

“Competition will improve, especially in the ladies category. Some teams from last year have really stepped up their game, which will make the league more competitive and interesting. In the men’s category, the competition has always been tough, with last year’s top five teams being potential champions,” said Phangwana.

Nust women and City Knights had a bye following the departure of Highlanders, who announced that they would not be taking part in this year’s competition after being hit by a player exodus.

Mavericks’ Mxolisi Ndlovu will be hoping to defend the coach of the year title in the women’s category for the third time.

Ndlovu won bronze with Nust at provincial level, gold with Mavericks in the league and at national level.

It remains to be seen whether the defending champions have the willpower to dominate Bulawayo basketball again.
