A manager at the Bulawayo City Council’s Fire and Ambulance Services Department has been suspended from work for allegedly siphoning over 20,000 litres of fuel over a three-year period, sources within the local authority have said..
The scandal also attracted the attention of the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) who said they were awaiting the outcome of an internal audit being carried out by the local authority.
Council sources said the manager (name supplied) was served with his letter of suspension on Monday last week and a hearing was held on Thursday after the finalisation of the internal audit exercise, whose outcome is now circulating among directors ahead of its presentation to the next full council meeting.
“The internal audit report was damning, there was nowhere the matter could be swept under the carpet, moreso having been exposed in the media. The official was served with a suspension letter on Monday amid a hearing whose outcome is almost certain now,” said the source.
Bulawayo City spokesperson, Ms Bongiwe Ngwenya, could neither confirm nor deny that the manager was served with his letter of suspension, saying that council policy prohibits commenting on employee matters in the media.
“Investigations are underway, and please note that the City of Bulawayo does not comment on employee matters in the media,” she said.
