THE Bulawayo City Council’s entire internet-dependent service system crashed on Monday, bringing key operations to a standstill.
From blocked emails to a dead customer contact centre and inaccessible websites, the city’s digital backbone failed spectacularly — and services are only expected to be restored by Saturday, 19 July 2025.
In a public notice dated Wednesday, 16 July 2025, Town Clerk Christopher Dube confirmed the system collapse and issued an apology to residents.
“The City of Bulawayo would like to advise members of the public of a fault which has occurred on our internet service system affecting business operations,” said Dube. “The fault occurred on Monday, 14 July 2025 and affects the City of Bulawayo email system, Customer Contact Centre, website and other internet dependent systems.”
The shutdown has disrupted communication between the public and municipal departments, leaving many without access to essential services like bill inquiries, service requests and public notices.
Despite the chaos, Dube assured residents that physical payment options are still available.
“Residents are able to still visit the Municipal Revenue Offices for transactions and payment of bills,” he said.
“The City of Bulawayo understands the importance of reliable internet service and efforts are being made to attend to the technical failure as soon as possible.”
Residents have been urged to brace for possible delays until the system is fully restored.
